10 years of chasing
Wednesday, October 18, 2017 - 02:25

"You lose track of where you are going if you forget where you have been"

A phrase that the rock band "Devour The Day" uses in their music video "The Bottom". It's something I've thought about a lot recently, especially knowing that 10 years from my first storm chase was coming up. The last 10 years have been kind of crazy, with lots of ups and downs and a move halfway across the country all over one thing: water vapor.

I started off as a 23 year old guy in Lansing, MI who had been interested in weather for years and...

ChaserCon Canada Presentation
Thursday, October 5, 2017 - 21:33

I recently spoke at my first ChaserCon in Canada which was held in Calgary this year. Unfortunately I caught a bit of a cold and struggled through my presentation, but that is the problem with dry air.

I love Calgary, it's one of my favorite cities to visit. The scenery is absolutely amazing. Banff/Yoho/Jasper/Kananaskis/etc is some of the prettiest country you will find anywhere. I also saw one of the best structured supercells back in 2016 on Canada Day (July 1st) just north of Calgary.

It was great to finally put some faces to names and to hang out with some super awesome...

Hurricane Irma
Tuesday, September 5, 2017 - 18:05

It appears I may be undertaking my first Hurricane chase this upcoming weekend in Florida as Irma appears to make landfall as a strong annular hurricane. Right now models are showing a south Florida landfall, but they have been all over the place so I am placing very little stock in that.

I have booked flights (refundable/changeable) to Orlando on Friday evening, returning on Monday evening. I will be live streaming for the first time in over 4 years, this time to YouTube. You can catch my live stream on the StormTrack site at https://stormtrack.org/irma/

Photo updates
Wednesday, October 12, 2016 - 02:16

I started a project over a year ago to organize, catalog and re-edit all my photos from years past including storm chasing. I finally completed this task over the weekend and have uploaded the updated photos to the site. This has been a huge undertaking for me, as I've got nearly 65000 photos, of which I am using about 4000.

I'm using Adobe Lightroom, which has been fantastic software for this process. I am able to organize into albums/collections, publish to my websites, flickr, facebook, etc. as well as geotag photos. It's been a lot of work, but I am proud to have finished it.

Upcoming severe weather
Wednesday, April 20, 2016 - 14:49

I'm writing this on April 20th and as of right now computer models are showing a significant week of chasing up ahead. Hopefully they stick around!

I've been posting most of my forecast thoughts over at StormTrack nowadays, so that is the place to go to get most of those.

The GFS and ECMWF are both showing significant upper air support atop 3000+ J/KG of MLCAPE with dewpoints nearing 70 degrees across the I-35 corridor from Wichita to OKC to DFW on Tuesday April 26th. Definitely something to keep watch for.

Sunday also appears to be a good chase...

Upcoming Storm Season
Monday, March 21, 2016 - 10:36

Well spring is here as of yesterday, and storm season is just around the corner! I don't have much new to boast about this storm season, just a good season of solo chasing (mostly) coming up! I've added a Canon 6D full frame camera to my arsenal, so hopefully I can work on my stills a bit.

Jari will be out this year starting May 7th until May 31st. I'm really looking forward to that, and even more impressed at the $600 roundtrip flight we got from Helsinki to Dallas/Fort Worth.

I may end up live streaming a few chases on youtube this year, but we will see. I have some new devices that I need to...

"Chasecation" winding down
Friday, May 29, 2015 - 15:53

Had a great "Chasecation" 2015! Thanks to Jari Ylioja coming out again for his 5th year from Finland and for Jena McShane for coming down to Oklahoma for her second chance chasing. We had a very successful 2 weeks (4 days with Jena) with multiple supercell and tornado intercepts. The best tornado day of the bunch was May 27th near Canadian, TX where a very large and photogenic tornado touched down.

My chase season will be winding down from this point, with random chases north or locally as time and forecasts permit. Putting an end to one of the best May's in my memory with over 15,000...

StormTrack
Thursday, February 26, 2015 - 17:20

The long institution of StormTrack changed hands last month from long time owner Tim Vasquez to Steve Miller and a huge revitalization has been going on. If you are not currently a member, it's worth checking out at StormTrack.org. If you were a member and have become inactive, it's time to come back. New rules, new software, new weather library.

Tornado Forecasting Class
Wednesday, February 4, 2015 - 21:29

One of the cooler things I've gotten to be apart of at my job is the Tornado Forecasting Class that Rich Thompson of the SPC is putting on. I was tasked with setting up a live stream, and after 1 class I am pretty happy with the results. I'm also happy with all the information Rich went over, even if it was quite fast. I feel like I've learned a few new things already and will learn a lot over the next 8 classes.
