Storm Chase Details

Chase Date: April 29, 2016
Miles Logged: 199
States Chased: OK
Severe Risks: SPC Outlooks

Chase Recap:

The obvious target was the triple point like feature near Lawton, but I thought the chances of something a little more discrete were better down along a moisture boundary/perhaps a dryline feature in north Texas, so we started down I-35.

We didn’t get very far, and stopped at the Wynnewood/Elmer City OK-26 exit, then headed west a bit just in case the storm that was near Lawton continued to organize. It would drop some very large hail with 4″+ reports north of Lawton near Elgin/Fletcher.

We sat near Bray for awhile before some CU started really towering above us. We headed east following that, hoping it would fire. Lack of surface convergence and real good lift mechanism seemed to limit them really going, so we eventually headed north on OK76 to Lindsay then northwest to intercept the main storm to our west coming out of Lawton.

We got on some back roads southwest of Chickasha and were positioned almost perfectly according to radar, almost due north of the circulation, but never saw anything due to the HP messyness of the storm. Apparently those another mile west on the turnpike did see the tornado, but anyone east of there didn’t get a good view, eventhough we were basically in the tornado.

I continued through a pretty poor road network back east and northeast, following the storm to Norman where it died and our chase ended at Buffalo Wild Wings.
